Category Description


Participation is open to young people studying for a qualification in vocational education who have been born in 1991 or after. The vocational basic degree training refers to an education that will lead to a basic degree, or that is a preliminary training in an institute or as an apprentice.


In General


The competition organisers reserve the right to make changes in the competition arrangements in the task descriptions and timetables. Changes will be posted immediately www.taitaja2011.fi. More detailed instructions will be sent to finalists along with their competition invitations.


General Category Description


The competition tasks of this category are based on the requirements of level 3 (on a scale of 1-3) as described in the curriculum-based training of a vocational degree.
In the competition eight IT professionals will implement a modular customer work task. The competitors will be tested in their skills in equipment and software installation and system maintenance. It is required for the competitor to have good English skills. All the programs and material sources used in the competition are in English. The competition tasks are in Finnish. In the case of Swedish-speaking competitors in the finals, tasks in Swedish language will be arranged.


Skill requirements, the successful competitor should be able to:


-install and assemble a working PC from standard parts
-choose and install PC cards
-update computer hardware and software
-perform updating, optimization, and configuration of a PC using standard parts
-troubleshooting and repairing faults in hardware and software
-install, configure, and update user systems according to set requirements
-install and configure antivirus programs and remove viruses
-make and maintain required documentation
-have knowledge of and observe work and safety rules and regulations
-installation and configuration of LAN networks: work station to work station and server to work station and configuration of network cards
-to connect LAN network by cable according to EN 50173 standards
-to plan and build a LAN network according to the requirements(cables, switches, routes, adaptors)
-to configure LAN network active devices
-to install and configure network user system and protocols
-to install LAN server including basic services and perform as the LAN main user
-to install and configure LAN network work stations
-to locate and repair faults in the LAN network


Preliminary Evaluation Methods


The judges will decide the ranking of the competitors by giving points to each competitor. The World Skills CIS point system will be used in which the maximum points for each category is 100.


The performances are evaluated every day, the final evaluation criteria will be decided by the jury.


In case that a competitor risks his/her own or someone else's safety, it is possible to disqualify the competitor.

-network and network services (active devices and service) 30%
-electrical, work safety, and general professional skills 10%

There will be 8 competitors


For Use by Competitors


The required user systems and tools will be supplied to the competitors by the organisers. The user systems are in English language.


Equipment Used in Competition


-standard PCs, possibly also laptop computers
-switches/routers/WLAN support station
-user systems: Windows 7 Enterprise Edition, Windows 2008 Server R2 and Linux Debian 5.0.x
- server environment can also be arranged in an virtual environment if necessary


The Taitaja 2011 Diploma


A Taitaja 2011 Diploma will be given to the competitors for the competition tasks completed. These tasks are based on working life and the curriculum-based training of a basic vocational degree. The diploma will by signed by the representative from working life in this category.


The competitor, the jury, representatives from working life, and teachers will participate in the skills evaluation. The evaluation points are work process, the task, and the mastery of knowledge of the field and of work safety. In the evaluation discussion the basis for the evaluation decision will be given. The Taitaja 2011 Diploma combined evaluation will be level 3 (on a scale of 1-3).


The Taitaja 2011 Diploma will be given out after the competition in conjunction with the medal ceremony.


What comes after the Taitaja Competition?


If the competitor would like to continue competing after the National Taitaja competition, it is possible to apply for training for the World Skills competition. For information, the category shop master or the organisers. It is also possible to apply for training for the World Skills competition if not in Taitaja. In these cases, sufficient skills and commitment will need to be shown.
